Earlier this month, an unexpected and rather exciting find was discovered beneath the streets of London…
During the demolition of the old Temperance Hospital near Euston Station in London, developers unearthed two time capsules dating back to the Victorian era. Buried beneath the foundation stones in 1879 and 1884, these glass jars have remained unseen for generations.
But now, their secrets have been revealed. The capsules contain a number of newspapers, journals and pamphlets relating to the temperance movement that inspired the very hospital they were buried beneath. A third capsule from 1907 is yet to be uncovered.
A means of communication with people in the future, time capsules usually contain a historic cache of objects or information that is buried to mark specific celebrations or important dates. The Victorians placed one under Cleopatra’s needle in 1878. The Blue Peter team planted one beneath the O2 Arena in 1998. Many schools and families across the country buried one to mark the millennium… There are even four time capsules currently “buried” in space!
